Growing potatoes at home is one of the most rewarding gardening projects for beginners. With minimal equipment and a little patience, you can harvest your own crop of fresh, flavorful potatoes.
Start by chitting your seed potatoes — placing them in a cool, bright spot to encourage sprouts. Once sprouts reach about 2 cm, they are ready to plant.
Plant in trenches about 10–15 cm deep, spacing them 30 cm apart. As the plants grow, mound soil around the stems to encourage more tubers.
Water consistently, especially during dry spells. Harvest early varieties when flowers appear, and maincrop varieties after the foliage yellows and dies back.
