Apple

Crisp, sweet, and endlessly versatile — the fruit that grows in every temperate garden.

Apple

History

Apples originated in Central Asia, where wild apples still grow in the mountains of Kazakhstan. They were spread along the Silk Road and cultivated by the Greeks and Romans, becoming one of the world's most important fruits.

How to grow

Plant young trees in well-drained soil in full sun.

Space 4–8 meters apart depending on rootstock.

Prune annually in winter for shape and fruit production.

Harvest in autumn when fruit separates easily from the spur.

Choosing and storing

Choose firm, unbruised apples with vibrant color.

Avoid apples with soft spots, bruises, or broken skin.

Store in the refrigerator crisper for 1–3 months.

Keep away from bananas and other ethylene-producing fruits.

Freeze sliced apples for longer storage.

Preparation

Wash thoroughly.

Peel if desired, or leave skin on for nutrients.

Toss cut apples in lemon juice to prevent browning.
