History
Broccoli was developed from wild cabbage in the Mediterranean, particularly Italy, during the Roman Empire. It was brought to America by Italian immigrants in the 1920s and has since become a global favorite.
How to grow
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost.
Transplant to rich soil, 30–50 cm apart.
Keep consistently moist and cool.
Harvest before buds open, 60–90 days.
Choosing and storing
Choose firm, dark green heads with tight buds.
Avoid yellowing or open buds — they're past prime.
Stems should look fresh, not dry or woody.
Store in the refrigerator crisper, unwashed.
Use within 5–7 days.
Blanch before freezing for longer storage.
Preparation
Rinse thoroughly and trim the stem.
Cut into florets of even size.
Peel and slice stems for cooking.
