Lettuce

Crisp, refreshing, and the foundation of salads across every season.

Lettuce

History

Lettuce was cultivated by ancient Egyptians over 4,000 years ago and spread throughout the Mediterranean. It was valued both as food and for its medicinal, sleep-inducing properties.

How to grow

Sow seeds in cool weather, spring or autumn.

Space 15–20 cm apart in rich, moisture-retentive soil.

Provide partial shade in hot climates to prevent bolting.

Harvest outer leaves as needed or cut the whole head.

Choosing and storing

Choose crisp, vibrant leaves with no wilting or browning.

Avoid heads with slimy or yellowing edges.

Wrap loosely in paper towels and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Do not wash until ready to use.

Use within 5–7 days for best quality.

Preparation

Wash thoroughly and dry with a salad spinner or towels.

Tear leaves by hand rather than cutting to prevent browning.

Dress just before serving to maintain crispness.
