History

Oranges originated in southern China and northeast India, spreading west along trade routes. They were cultivated in the Mediterranean by the 9th century and became a global crop after European colonization.

How to grow

Plant young trees in well-drained, sandy soil in full sun.

Space 4–7 meters apart.

Water deeply and consistently.

Harvest in winter to spring, 3–5 years after planting.

Choosing and storing

Choose heavy, firm oranges with smooth skin.

Avoid soft, moldy, or green oranges.

Store in the refrigerator crisper for 2–3 weeks.

Or keep at room temperature for 3–5 days.

Freeze juice or segments for longer storage.

Preparation

Rinse before zesting or cutting.

Zest before juicing if desired.

Peel and segment, or cut into wedges.
