Peas

Sweet, tender, and the first taste of spring — a garden favorite.

Peas

History

Peas are one of the oldest cultivated crops, with evidence of cultivation dating back over 9,000 years in the Near East. They were a staple in medieval European diets and played a role in Gregor Mendel's genetics experiments.

How to grow

Sow seeds directly in early spring or autumn.

Space 5–8 cm apart in rows, provide support for tall varieties.

Keep consistently moist.

Harvest regularly, 55–70 days.

Choosing and storing

Choose bright green, plump pods.

Avoid yellowing or dull pods.

Peas should fill the pod but not bulge.

Store in the refrigerator, unshelled.

Use within 3–5 days.

Blanch and freeze for longer storage.

Preparation

Shell garden peas; leave snow and snap peas whole.

Rinse thoroughly.

String snap peas if needed.
