History

Spinach originated in ancient Persia and was brought to China in the 7th century, then to Europe by the Moors in the 11th century. It became a Mediterranean staple and gained fame through Popeye cartoons in the 20th century.

How to grow

Sow seeds in cool weather, early spring or autumn.

Space 10–15 cm apart in rich, well-drained soil.

Keep consistently moist — spinach bolts if dry.

Harvest outer leaves as needed, 35–45 days.

Choosing and storing

Choose crisp, dark green leaves with no yellowing.

Avoid slimy or wilted leaves.

Store in the refrigerator crisper in a plastic bag.

Do not wash until ready to use.

Use within 5–7 days.

Preparation

Wash thoroughly to remove grit and sand.

Remove tough stems if desired.

Drain well before cooking or serving.
