History

The modern garden strawberry was created in France in the 1750s by crossing North and South American varieties. Strawberries have been enjoyed since Roman times and became a symbol of purity and love.

How to grow

Plant in well-drained, rich soil in full sun.

Space 30–45 cm apart; provide mulch to keep fruit clean.

Water consistently, especially during fruiting.

Harvest when fully red, 60–90 days.

Choosing and storing

Choose bright red, fragrant berries with green calyx.

Avoid soft, moldy, or pale berries.

Do not wash until ready to eat.

Store in the refrigerator for 3–5 days.

Freeze for longer storage.

Preparation

Rinse gently just before use.

Hull (remove the green calyx) with a knife or straw.

Slice, quarter, or leave whole as desired.
