Ingredients

  • 3 medium Large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 4 oz Cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Fresh chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. Melt butter with olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sprinkle with salt.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every few minutes, for 35-45 minutes until deep golden brown. Do not rush.
  3. If onions start to stick, add a splash of water and scrape the browned bits.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool. Finely chop half the onions and leave the rest in larger pieces.
  5. In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and cream cheese. Whisk until smooth.
  6. Stir in the caramelized onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pepper, and thyme.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  8. Before serving, sprinkle with chives. Serve with chips, crackers, or raw vegetables.
